Step Off or Play Through
‘Golf and country clubs’ is a phrase that should be as ubiquitous as ‘death and taxes’ or as omnipresent as ‘oil and water.’ For western society, both the clubs and the sport originated in Scotland. Despite the increased egalitarianism since the fifteenth century, they’ve both been the purvey of royalty and the upper classes.
Golf is intended to be challenging and soothing, while country clubs should be both beautiful and relaxing. It’s a sign of having arrived when you can not only attend the club but play the legendary game of kings. Club membership is usually exclusive. Any true golfer will tell you that good game, as well, is also reserved for those who breathe more rarefied air.
The Butte Creek Country Club has all the earmarks of the traditional upper-level country club. It’s situated near the eponymous Butte Creek tributary. The creek is known for its scenic, Grand Canyon-like landscape. There are several human-made dams and bridges, including the Honey Run Covered Bridge, “the only three-level covered bridge left in the United States.”
The country club has a winding golf course, with classically trimmed trees and simple water runs, positioned beside the paths. The club grounds are verdant, and the course is flat. The area is lush, and the golf-play is relaxing, known for being a course that’s challenging but fair.
The club’s amenities are also known to be a cut above. It gets high marks for its staff and services. Many patrons comment on the cuisine. Club members compliment the ‘refreshing,’ ‘settled’ nature of the place.
The patrons seem to appreciate the fully staffed, ‘never-crowded’ atmosphere. It also helps that the club is at Chico, California, a town knows as the ‘City of Roses.’ Chico rests at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, an incredible view of granite peaks, which boasts the headwaters of the mighty Sacramento River.
